How to Build a DIY Smart Irrigation System with a Smart Switch

by OuOliver 31 Aug 2025 0 Comments

For every garden enthusiast, there's immense satisfaction in watching your plants thrive. But with that joy comes the daily chore of watering—a task that's not only time-consuming but also difficult to get just right. Especially during a hot summer spell or when you're away on vacation, ensuring your garden gets the proper care can be a real challenge.

The good news? Technology offers a simple, elegant solution. You can now easily build your own cost-effective smart irrigation system. Today, we’ll show you how to use a Tongou Smart Switch and our brand-new TOWPS Outdoor Waterproof Smart Switch Box to automate your garden, giving you complete control, no matter where you are.

Why Use a Smart Switch for Garden Automation?

  • Save Time & Effort: Say goodbye to the daily ritual of manual watering and spend more time simply enjoying your garden.

  • Conserve Water: Precise scheduling and remote control prevent overwatering, saving water and lowering your utility bills.

  • Healthier Plants: Consistent, scheduled watering is the key to healthier, more vibrant plants.

  • Total Remote Control: Away from home? Turn your sprinklers on or off right from your smartphone app.

  • Affordable & Effective: Compared to expensive professional irrigation systems, this DIY approach is incredibly budget-friendly for any homeowner.

What You'll Need for Your Project

1. The Brains (Your Controller):

Option A (The Outdoor Champion): Tongou TOWPS Outdoor Waterproof Smart Switch Box: This is our top recommendation for any outdoor setup. With a robust IP67 waterproof and dustproof rating, it’s built to withstand rain, sun, and dirt. It combines the smart switch and its protective enclosure into one seamless unit, making it the safest and most reliable way to control an outdoor water pump or solenoid valve.

Option B (Indoor/Sheltered Control): Tongou Smart Switch / Smart Breaker: If your power source is located indoors or in a sheltered area like a garage or covered patio, a standard smart switch or a DIN rail smart breaker connected to the outlet is a great alternative.

2. The Muscle (The Actuator):

A small water pump (if using a water barrel or pond).

A solenoid valve (if connecting directly to a garden tap/faucet ).

3. The Veins (The Irrigation Network):

Main hose, drip lines, or sprinklers.

The necessary connectors and fittings for your garden layout.

Let's Build It: Your 3-Step Guide to a Smart Garden

Step 1: The Wiring (Safety First!)

Before starting any electrical work, you MUST turn off the main power at your circuit breaker. If you are not comfortable or experienced with wiring, please hire a licensed electrician.

Using the TOWPS Waterproof Box (Outdoor Setup):

  • Open the waterproof box. Following the user manual, connect the main power Live (L) and Neutral (N) wires to the INPUT terminals.
  • Connect the power wires from your water pump or solenoid valve to the OUTPUT terminals.
  • Ensure all connections are tight and secure, then close and seal the lid firmly to guarantee it's watertight.
  • Mount the box securely to a wall or post near your power and water source.

Using a Standard Smart Switch (Indoor Setup):

  • Install the smart switch or smart breaker into the circuit or breaker box that controls the power outlet for your pump.
  • Plug your water pump into the outlet that is now controlled by the smart switch.

Step 2: Laying Out the Water Lines

  1. Connect the inlet of your water pump to your water source (e.g., a rain barrel) or attach the solenoid valve to your main water tap.
  2. Connect the outlet of the pump or valve to your main irrigation hose.
  3. Lay out your drip lines or position your sprinklers around your garden to ensure all your plants will be covered.

Step 3: Connect to the App & Automate!

This is where the magic happens.

  1. Turn the main power back on. The indicator light on your smart switch or waterproof box should begin flashing to show it’s in pairing mode.
  2. Open the "Tuya Smart" or "Smart Life" app on your phone.
  3. Tap the ‘+’ icon in the top right corner and follow the on-screen instructions. The app should automatically discover the device, and pairing will be complete in seconds.
  4. Once added, you can now instantly turn your irrigation system on and off from anywhere in the world using your phone!
